TULSA, Oklahoma -

A cool and cloudy day saw the first ever Tulsa Walk to Defeat ALS Saturday at Guthrie Green. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The disease robs people of the ability to control their muscles and ultimately takes their life.

Over 500 people showed up to raise money to fight the disease. They had already exceeded the fundraising goal of $50,000 and were closing in on $70,000, according to Andrew Christy of the ALS Association.

"Those funds are going to be staying right here in Tulsa and in Oklahoma, being able to provide all those services that are needed for the ALS community," he said.

Susan Bode and a group of her friends - called the the Groovy Chicks - turned out in support of Susan's mother, who was diagnosed in April.

"There's no known cure; there's really no good treatment right now, so it's all about raising awareness and raising funds for research," said Susan Bode.

The event had speakers, music and food along with the walk.
