Two people stabbed each other Tuesday morning in Broken Arrow during an altercation between two men who knew each other.

Police say a man driving a white dump truck west on Albany picked up an acquaintance who asked for a ride. While the truck was on its way to a job site, the driver told police the passenger pulled out a knife, demanded the driver's money and stabbed him in the torso.

Police say the driver fought back, stabbed the man in the neck, and eventually stopped at the Ninth and Albany Kum & Go convenience store until police and paramedics arrived. The two men were taken to hospitals and police said they are in stable condition.

They said the ending of this incident could have been a lot worse.

"If the victim was to have passed out or succumbed to injuries and not be able to control that vehicle and it goes into the middle of the intersection, you're looking at a much more serious situation," BAPD Cpl. Leon Calhoun said.

Calhoun said the suspect, 32-year-old Gustavo Alvarez, is charged with first-degree robbery and assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
