The potential for severe thunderstorms including damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and a small threat for tornadoes is in the forecast for late tonight through early Tuesday morning across eastern Oklahoma as another powerful upper-level storm moves near the area.

"Strong south and southeast surface winds will feed moisture into the system with the storms capable of producing very heavy rainfall and damaging winds as the line moves eastward," said WARN Team Meteorologist Alan Crone.

Scattered showers and drizzle are expected through Monday afternoon with gusty south winds. Widespread heavier rain is likely during the evening and overnight hours as the main storm starts shifting through our state.

"Surface instability and convective energy may be somewhat low across eastern Oklahoma, but extremely strong wind shear (direction and speed) will be present with this system," he said.

"Despite the early Tuesday morning arrival the threat for severe weather will remain."

"The nature of the expected wind profile could support embedded supercell storms within the squall line capable of producing damaging wind and possibly a tornado," Crone said. "You’ll want to remain aware off your weather surroundings late tonight through early Tuesday until the line passes your area."

The squall line will likely arrive after midnight in our westernmost counties with the Tulsa area seeing this final round of storms between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., Mike Grogan said Monday afternoon.

Another 1 to 3 inches of rain is likely across the area through midday Tuesday.

"The rain and storms should exit eastern Oklahoma by late morning on Tuesday with gusty winds continuing throughout the day," Grogan said.

A flash flood watch is in effect Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon for counties in east central and southeast Oklahoma. Those counties include Adair, Cherokee, Choctaw, Delaware, Haskell, LeFlore, McCurtain, McIntosh, Muskogee, Pittsburg, Pushmataha and Sequoyah.

Heavy rainfall could result in flash flooding of small creeks and streams. Residents are advised to be ready for quick action if flash flooding is observed or a warning is issued.
