Man Shoots At Tulsa Deputy After Traffic Stop

Tulsa County sheriff's deputies are looking for a man who fired ten rounds at a deputy after a traffic stop near Southwest Boulevard early Wednesday.  

The sheriff's office said the deputy, Leighton Boyd, stopped a sport utility vehicle at 19th and Phoenix just after midnight because a license plate on the vehicle didn't belong to the SUV.

As the deputy got out his patrol unit, a passenger also exited the SUV and began firing at the deputy. TCSO Captain John Bryant said the deputy was not hit, even though bullets struck his unit six times. He said the deputy took cover behind the vehicle, but he did not return fire because the shooter already had run.

Bryant says two other people in the SUV were taken into custody and when questioned claimed they didn't know the shooter and had only offered him a ride just prior to the traffic stop. They described the shooter as a male, between 18-20 years of age, wearing dark pants and a dark hoodie.  

The Tulsa police helicopter and a K9 officer searched for the shooter but could not find him.  

TCSO Captain Melissa Tapper said they are thankful that everyone was able to go home safely.
