Getting rid of cooking grease and oil without making a mess can be difficult.

On Sunday, the Tulsa utilities department hosted an event to help people learn some better techniques.

The City of Tulsa maintains more than 2,000 miles of sewer lines, and that can be a lot to keep up with when gunk like cooking oil is clogging the line.

Skip Oxford is the king of Turkey at his home, and frying up the traditional Thanksgiving bird takes a lot of oil.

“I fry two, so I finished up Saturday,” he said. “I fried one for Thanksgiving and then fried another one for Saturday."

Pouring gunk like this down the drain may seem harmless, but if it can clog your arteries, imagine what it can do to the sewer system.

"Grease builds up over time in the sewer line and it will clog the line, and then we'll get a backup,” John Beasly said.

"Costing the city money, thus costing the taxpayers of Tulsa money,” the city said.

Thanksgiving tends to be a heavy oil using holiday, so the city set sup a recycling event for Turkey fryers like Oxford.
