Former Oklahoma State running back Barry Sanders has been selected as the recipient of the 2015 PwC Doak Walker Legends Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday.

The annual award is distributed to former running backs that become prominent figures in their respective communities following their collegiate careers. Since introducing the accolade in 1998, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum has honored some of college football’s biggest names, including Bo Jackson (2014), Walter Payton (2006) and Earl Campbell (2002).

During his time as a Cowboy, Sanders tore his way through the Oklahoma State record books, setting numerous individual career-highs including rushing touchdowns (53), all purpose yards per game (171.4) and touchdowns scored (60).

Dubbed as the greatest season in college football history by an ESPN.com vote in 2014, Sanders’ 1988 campaign culminated in the prestigious Heisman Trophy. During that season, Sanders registered 373 carries for 2,850 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and 42 touchdowns in addition to tallying four 300-yard rushing games.

“Barry Sanders’ NCAA single-season rushing record may be one of the greatest college accomplishments of our day and his NFL career was just as prolific,” said Scott Moore, PwC North Texas Managing Partner. “We honor Barry, not only as a phenomenal athlete, but also as an individual who believes in the importance of education and providing opportunities to underprivileged children.”

Following his Oklahoma State career, Sanders became heavily involved in community efforts. Since 2005, he has hosted the annual Barry Sanders and Friends Celebrity Golf Classic, a tournament devoted to raising funds for increasing awareness for a number of charities.

Sanders will accept the honor at the Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet, set for Friday, Feb. 19, in Dallas, Texas.
