Bartlesville State Representative Earl Sears announced Monday he wants to be the Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Sears, who is currently Chairman of the House's Appropriations and Budget committee, made the formal announcement during a speech in Bartlesville.

The election for Speaker of the House will take place in May.  The state legislature reconvenes on the first Monday in February.

Earl Sears was first elected to the District 11 House seat in 2007.  The district includes parts of Tulsa, Rogers and Washington counties.

The Bartlesville native says this year marks the beginning of his final term in the state House and he felt there is some business he still wants to accomplish in the legislature and becoming speaker will help with that goal.
