Tulsa Head Coach Frank Haith says his team is playing better offensively this year compared to last year but needs to get back to playing better defensively.

Judging by their performance against East Carolina this past Tuesday, that way is not the most fan friendly, but the most effective.

Defense wins championships and winning games like Tuesday’s is a start.

"That's our identity,” said senior forward Rashad Smith. “There's been games where we've scored the ball really well, but they've also scored the ball well and we've taken L's.”

Smith is referring to last season when TU gave up over 60 points 12 times. This current campaign the Golden Hurricane has given up over 60 points 11 times.

With half of the schedule left to play, Coach Haith has a theory as to why there's such a sudden change.

"When you get better offensively, guys that theory tends to, it slips on the defensive end. And we are better offensively, but that's our identity,” he explained. “You heard Smitty say, ‘That's who we are.’ We are a team that scraps out loose balls; that's who we are and it is what is, and that's how we win games."

The team knows what to do, now it's a matter of doing what they do. To use the old adage: While offense sells tickets defense may get the Hurricane on a championship path.
