A warning for any homeowner who has a leaky roof -- you'll have to be patient. Local roofing companies say thanks to this very rainy winter, it's taking them several weeks to get to some customers.

These companies say the more rain we get, the more leaks are getting noticed.

One company we talked to says they can't remember ever being this busy. And that means customers have to wait.

Crews had to tear the drywall from a home on 71st and Yale because of a leak in the roof.

"Over the heavy rains, it had sogged so much they went ahead and took it down," Jay Stout said.

Stout, with A-Best Roofing, said that is typical of the homes they've seen so far this season. Powerful wind gusts, coupled with heavy rain, is making more work for his crews.

"I think El Nino's really throwing us a big curve,” Stout said.

And it's throwing them some big business.

Stout says in his 30 years of working in roofing he's never seen so many problems with residential roofs, and business never has been so good.

"We had about 400 phone calls the weekend right after Christmas, and the phone continues to ring daily, all day long," he said.

Stout said about half of those calls turn out not to be a roof issue after all. The leaks may be coming from the siding, or mortar or through a window.

This home does have a roof leak, and it was relatively easy to find.

"Well, if you look right here, you can see the white and the rusty nail right next to it,” Stout said.

He warns that if a roofing company tells you they can come to your home right away. They might not be a reputable company. And you should check references for any roofer you use.
