For the first time, we're hearing from a Pryor teen who was shot after pulling a ‘ding, dong ditching’ prank on New Year’s Day.

Cole Peyton said it was a silly prank that didn't mean anyone any harm, but ended with him starting 2016 in the hospital.

The 14 year old is home now but said home doesn't feel the same.

"I never thought I would've been shot. And it was just really shocking. I didn't even believe it when it happened," he said.

In his own words, Cole explained what happened just after midnight in his neighborhood.

"We were in the garage and just decided to walk around for a bit...One of our friends just had the amazing idea to go knock on the door," Cole explained.

The boys ran around back and were deciding whether to knock again when police said Derek Morgan came out, told the boys to stop, thought one of them was reaching for a weapon, and fired.

Police marked where Cole was when he was shot; it wasn’t in the Morgan's backyard, but in the middle of the street - 85 feet from the home.

Cole said, "I was just thinking that I have to find a way to stop the bleeding, and I have to stay strong. And I sent a prayer and prayed for help; just knew I had to get through this."

A bullet hit him in the back and traveled through his body. He said he asked Morgan's dad, Gary, to call 911, but he hesitated.

"He walked over and told me to get up, and so I got up and he walked me over to his front porch, and I laid down, and he just got outside, gave a blanket and threw it on me and left me there. And I asked his wife for some gauze, or anything, really, and she just said, 'No, the ambulance can give you that,'" Cole said.

Cole thought of his family. His mom, two doors down, couldn't help.

“He didn't want to even close his eyes because he was afraid that he would die and he knew how bad it would tear me up," Cole’s mother, Kim Hall, said.

Now, waiting to see a specialist and start physical therapy, Cole knows the prank was childish, but the response shouldn't have been gunshots.

"Over something like that. Over ringing somebody's doorbell," Hall said.

Derek Morgan is facing a felony charge of assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

We contacted his attorney, Chuck Ramsey, but he declined to comment.

Peyton's gunshot wounds were life threatening and his family has set up a GoFundMe account to help pay medical bills.
