Wednesday, City of Tulsa crews will begin a major street rehabilitation project on the 61st and Memorial intersection. The work is expected to last through the fall.

Tuesday, the public got one last opportunity to ask about what to expect and how homes and businesses in the area will be impacted until, at least, November.

Beginning Wednesday, if your commute brings you through the intersection of 61st and Memorial in Tulsa, the City, and City Engineer Henry Som de Cerff, has some advice for you.

“There are going to be workers and equipment, so slow down and leave early and pay attention,” he said.

The multi-million dollar project is funded through the 2008 third-penny sales tax and crews will replace the pavement and install new traffic signals, sidewalks and handicap ramps. They will also put in a new waterline.

Som de Cerff said, "There has been some concern expressed from people that we worked on the line before so why are we going back again."

He explained, this is actually phase two of a total water main replacement on 61st, between Mingo and Sheridan.

"A year from now, there will be similar work at 61st and Sheridan," Som de Cerff said.

E. Carlton James has lived in the area for more than 30 years, and his law firm is located there as well. He worries about access for his clients.

“For us, to be able to give them the proper instructions and directions to get to us. It’s hard enough to be able to get around town anyway, even if everything is in good condition," James said.

The City said businesses will never be completely cut off, and, pending any unforeseen problem, there will be at least one lane open in each direction at all times.

This phase is set to be finished in November before the final phase, a similar project at 61st and Sheridan.
