We see American flags flying almost everywhere we go, but Representative Ken Walker says he wants to make sure that any flag purchased with taxpayer dollars doesn't just look American but is American.

"For our symbol to be made outside our country just doesn't seem right," said Liberty Flags owner Charlotte Zakharian.

Liberty Flags is a family owned company that has been in Tulsa since 1982.

"Almost every day, someone will come in and say ‘well, where are your flags made,’" added Zakharian.

Her family has sold American flags made in America since opening their doors, and she says she's glad to see this kind of proposal.

Representative Walker talked with News On 6 after meeting with Tulsa city council members about House Bill 2341.

"I think it supports the American farmer,” stated Walker. “It supports the American manufacturer and the American retailer."

The bill would require all American flags paid for by taxpayers be American made from the fabric down to the assembly.

But with Oklahoma facing a budget crisis and possible revenue failure some ask is this the right time to work on this kind of legislation.

“Believe me, we are focused on those issues,” Walker explained. “I was just at the House of Representatives a few days ago spending a few hours with the republican caucus on the budget issues, and so we're able to deal with the budget issues and focus on the needs and desires of our constituents as well."

And Walker says it's something constituents want with more and more people asking for "Made in America."

“We've always said if the flag is no longer made in America that we can sell then we won't be in business any longer," explained Zakharian.
