Hearing Set For Tulsa Man Charged With Using Drone To Smuggle Items Into Prison

A Tulsa man accused in a plot to fly a drone over the walls at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester has been released from the Pittsburg County jail on bond pending an April preliminary hearing.  

Marquis Gilkey is charged with attempting to bring contraband into penal institution, conspiracy, kidnapping and gang related offense.

Gilkey, 30, has served time in prison for armed robbery and assault.

Prison officials say investigators found a photo on the drone of a woman flying it. The woman - identified as JG in court papers - said she was kidnapped by Gilkey, forced to buy the drone and learn how to use it to smuggle items into the prison.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections say items found on the drone included two – 12-inch hacksaw blades, a cellphone, a cellphone battery, a hands-free device, two packages of Newport Cigarettes, two packages of Black & Mild cigars, two tubes of super glue, a bag containing marijuana, a bag containing methamphetamine and a bag containing heroin.

Gilkey's preliminary hearing is now scheduled for April 7.
