OKMULGEE COUNTY, Oklahoma -

Authorities have released the name of a man killed in a deputy-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon in Okmulgee County. John Neuman of Gore was charged in the death of his wife last year.

Neuman was driving a semi that went off Highway 75 and crashed into a pond around 2 p.m. February 3, according to Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice.

A release from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says Neuman refused to come out of the truck then began shooting as deputies ordered him to exit.

A deputy returned fire and shot the 53-year-old man, who fell into the pond, OSBI states.

"Crews went to rescue Neuman from drowning when he rose from the water and began shooting again. The deputy returned fire," OSBI said in a news release.

Neuman was pronounced dead. Emergency crews tried to revive him but were not successful, the release states.

He was accused of beating his wife to death in front of their children. Tanya Neuman was found dead of blunt force trauma in May 2015, and her husband was charged with second-degree murder, according to the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office.

He was wearing an ankle monitor when he was killed.

The district attorney will determine whether the deputy-involved shooting was justified, OSBI states.
