State Experiencing Mild Flu Season Compared To Last Two Years

Compared to the past two years, this year's flu season in Oklahoma has been very mild.

Since October 4, 2015 there has been only 126 hospitalizations and no deaths, according to the Oklahoma Department of Health.

By this time last year, the OSHD reported 82 state residents had died from influenza.  That compares to 72 deaths in the 2013-214 flu season.

Despite this year's lower flu numbers, health officials say people should still take precautions.

  • Frequent hand hygiene using soap and water, or alcohol-based products such as hand gels when hands are not visibly soiled.
  • Make “respiratory hygiene” a habit, including use of tissues to cover coughs and sneezes, then disposing of them and performing hand hygiene at once. When tissues are not readily available, use your sleeve, never your hands.
  • Stay home from work, school, and other public places when you are ill.
