Flames Erupt At Industrial Site Near Chandler Park

Firefighters are working to put out flames at an industrial site on the west side of Tulsa.

Thursday afternoon flames erupted near West 21st Street and 49th West Avenue between the oil refinery and Chandler Park.

Video from Osage SkyNews 6 HD shows thick black smoke pouring out of the area, along with damage to buildings within the site.

Several firefighters are working to protect the remaining buildings and equipment.

The main concerns are the flammable materials stored inside some of the industrial businesses, says News On 6 reporter Annie Chang. 

Authorities had to work quickly to make sure flames did not spread to those buildings. 

There have been multiple fire departments on the scene, including Berryhill and Sand Springs going back-and-forth to refill on water. 

As a precaution, several businesses have chosen to evacuate.

"It's a lot of ash,” said Mela Jones of Tank Consultants Inc. “At first, it wasn't all the ash in the air; it was just smoke. And now, we're releasing the ash. Our management decided just to air on the side of safety and let all the employees go home. We are trying to protect the building, however because there are flammables and things like that in our shop."

As of 5:00 p.m., the smoke is letting up slightly. It's clearer than it was at 4:00 p.m.

But if you can, avoid the area and do not drive into the smoke.
