Woman Nearly Carjacked At Busy Tulsa Intersection

A woman said a carjacker tricked her into pulling over and tried to get in her car at one of Tulsa’s busiest intersections.

She said it happened around 3 p.m. at 71st and Highway 169 near the on-ramp.

The victim, Shari, said she was getting on 169, headed north, when a man carrying a bicycle set it down on the ramp right in front of her vehicle.

"He puts it down to block the lanes and says ‘stop, stop, stop.’ I thought there had been an accident, so I pulled into the right-hand lane," she said.

As soon as she pulled over he ran up to her, put the bike on her grill and tried to get inside.

"Started trying to get into the car, getting in my door, my sunroof, banging, hitting, kicking, shaking, rocking the car, and I was just shocked," she said.

"He would scream out, ‘someone is going to die because of you, someone is going to die because of you,’ so I found my phone and dialed 911."

He climbed on top of her car, pried at her sunroof and kept banging and screaming until she showed him she was on the phone - that's when the attack stopped as abruptly as it started.

"He kinda meanders off and I put it in gear and floored it," she said.

A police officer told Shari there's a large homeless camp behind the Staples store on the other side of the intersection. Police said they routinely chase people out of the area and another wooded area nearby.

They said the biggest problem they normally have is people holding up signs and asking for money at the intersections.

Shari and her friends had no idea there was a homeless camp so close to a major shopping area.

"Nobody I've spoken to knows of this problem. No one ever had anything like this happen to them," she said.

Police said it’s always a good idea to keep your windows up and doors locked when you’re driving. They also say if someone needs help, it’s better to call 911 rather than to stop.
