Acting Tulsa County Sheriff Says Inmate Died In Hospital Days After Suicide Attempt

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Acting Tulsa County Sheriff Michelle Robinette has confirmed an inmate died on Wednesday.

Robinette said Nathan Bradshaw attempted suicide in his cell and was found unresponsive, then taken to a hospital where he later died.

She confirmed the information to News On 6 after a statement was emailed to the media at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. In the statement, it said the inmate was found unresponsive on Sunday, taken to a hospital and subsequently released from the jail. Records show Bradshaw's release was granted on “personal recognizance.”

The statement did not, however, address Bradshaw's current health, nor did it say he died or how.

By late evening, News On 6 partner The Frontier was able to confirm through a family member that Bradshaw was dead.

In a Thursday morning phone interview, Robinette said Bradshaw died after a suicide attempt.

She said he officially was released from the jail because he had a pulse and heartbeat when he was found by deputies, but doctors did not expect him to survive. Robinette said the jail historically has granted a release in similar grave situations so the county doesn't absorb of the cost of medical care for the inmate.

She also added that if an inmate is in custody, interaction with family would have to be limited, so Bradshaw’s release allowed his family to be by his side.

Robinette declined to state the details of Bradshaw's death, citing her respect for his family.

She says there is an investigation into his death and if anyone at the jail knew he was suicidal.

Marq Lewis, with the group "We The People Oklahoma" says he is concerned with Bradshaw's death because "you should not go to jail to die." He believes the sheriff's office has not been transparent about the matter.

"What happened? What pod was he in? Why did it take three days to release to the media something happened?" Lewis asked.
