A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in connection to a crash that claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy near Stillwater, Oklahoma, Monday afternoon.
According to Stillwater police, just before 6 p.m., officers responded to a one-vehicle collision at Sanborn Park on the north side of Stillwater. Preliminary investigation indicates that Dustin Scott Calhoun, a 33-year-old Payne County resident, was driving a 1996 Chevrolet pickup northbound on a gravel roadway in the park when he lost control and struck a tree with the passenger side of the pickup.
Calhoun’s 12-year-old stepson, Curtis Ray Barnes, and his 10-year-old stepson, Troy Dean Love, were passengers in the front seat of the vehicle. Barnes was pronounced dead at the scene. Love and Calhoun were transported from the scene to Stillwater Medical Center by LifeNet ambulance for treatment.
Love was treated and released to family members. Calhoun was transferred to OU Medical with incapacitating injuries.
According to police, Calhoun is under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. A blood sample was taken from Calhoun. However, test results are not immediately available.
The investigation into the cause of the collision is still ongoing, police said.
