OSU Introduces New Men’s Basketball Head Coach Brad Underwood

Posted: Updated:
STILLWATER, Oklahoma -

Oklahoma State University welcomed its new men’s basketball head coach Brad Underwood Wednesday afternoon.

If you made a checklist of the things OSU was looking for in its next head basketball coach, then start checking those boxes.

Underwood may not be a household name outside of diehard college basketball fans, but the more you find out about him, the more you realize it could be a great fit in Stillwater.

He grew up in McPherson, Kansas, and played at Kansas State under Jack Hartman. Hartman played at OSU for the legendary Henry Iba, so the "Iba Tree" connection is there.

And his teams at Stephen F. Austin the last three years played a style longtime OSU fans appreciate, hard-nosed defense and disciplined offense with all around hustle.

The Lumberjacks only lost one game in Southland Conference play in his three years in charge.

On Tuesday, Underwood and his family walked through Gallagher-Iba Arena and got acquainted with a lot of the people who work there. It was a bit of a nostalgic tour for the coach.

When he looked up into the rafters, he said, "It was loud.” That's what he's hoping for as he takes over. Fan support has fallen off, but he remembers coming here as an opposing player and being jealous of the loud crowd.

Some of those fans are expected to attend his welcoming this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
