Tulsa Middle School Students Build Coop, Raise Laying Hens

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Middle school students at Tulsa's Riverfield Country Day School received a special delivery on Friday.

They welcomed four 12-week-old chicks and two laying hens in to their Roots and Shoots Club.

It's a program that started 13 years ago.

Teachers say it gives students hands-on and up close learning with barnyard animals.

The kids built the coop themselves and Grogg's Green Barn donated the chickens.

"They have driven all the nails and the fence posts, they've done it all – sixth, seventh, eighth graders,” teacher Pam O’Halloran-Blevins said. "And the outdoors you couldn't have a better campus for an outdoor learning situation."

The school will sell the free-range fresh eggs and use that money to help maintain the barnyard.
