ALVA, Oklahoma -

The Oklahoma Archeological Survey shared photos after getting a call last week about a mammoth skull that was unearthed in northwestern Oklahoma.

The agency, located in Norman, said the skull was in a sand pit north of Alva. The remains include a partial skull with the top missing and two tusk fragments. The skull had one tooth in place and a second that had already been removed from the skull during initial clearing of the sand.

"This Columbian mammoth skull was deposited on a river channel sandbar," the Survey Facebook page states. "There is no sign of cultural association; nor is there any other skeletal elements."

The age of the skull has not yet been determined.
