TULSA, Oklahoma -

Several rounds of strong to severe storms are affecting Green Country today.  The culprit is a multifaceted storm system that will be in our area through Wednesday night.  Hail, high winds and isolated tornadoes are all possible as the day goes along.

WARN Interactive Radar

The first round of storms is pushing through eastern Oklahoma as I write this around 1:45 pm. These storms are elevated, meaning they are not rooted in air at the immediate surface.  This limits the high wind and tornado threat.  Large hail and torrential downpours are the main concerns with this initial wave.

Weather Alerts

The greater concern lies to our west where more heating is occurring close to the dry line and cold front located in western Oklahoma.  Along and ahead of these boundaries, storms are firing as they tap into greater energy levels. There is a higher risk of these storms becoming severe and pushing eastward into Green Country late in the afternoon and early evening.  This could affect the evening rush hour given the timing of these storms. For now, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for areas just west of Tulsa through the afternoon.  The primary risk will be high winds and large hail by late afternoon.  However, the low-level wind shear may strengthen by early evening, allowing a modest tornado threat to exist as well.

These storms will likely persist in the area through the evening hours, but shift into far eastern and southeastern Oklahoma after dark.  The dry line and cold front may lag behind these storms until early Thursday morning.  Until those boundaries clear Green Country, we can’t rule out additional storms.  However, the primary window of opportunity for severe thunderstorms is 3pm until 10pm tonight.

Behind this storm system, cooler, drier air arrives, allowing us to see a period of settled weather with chilly nights and mild days through the weekend.  For the latest severe weather updates in the meantime, be sure to follow me on Twitter: @GroganontheGO and on my Facebook page.
