Rather Than Restore Home After Tornado, Limestone Firefighter Chooses To Help Others

As an Oklahoman, tornadoes are not foreign to Greg Hewin. But it's different when it hits your neighborhood and your home.

"When your family, your neighbors, your whole community is involved, it's a whole different feeling,” explained Hewin. “It's a helpless feeling."

Many of Hewin's neighbors felt helpless on Wednesday night.

The tornado nearly tore Ron Fuller's storm shelter door off its hinges, as his family clung together inside.

"Looked out and the barns were gone and no shingles and it's like Twister, all over, check it off the bucket list,” said Fuller. “Been there, done that. Happy to be alive."

At the time, Hewin was on duty as a Limestone firefighter. He could have gone home, and stayed home, as a victim, himself, of the storm, but he didn't.

"I was fortunate,” Hewin stated. “I knew where all my family was."

Hewin got in his truck and drove to Stone Canyon in Owasso where damage was much more severe.

"It was really bad,” said Hewin. “I was expecting the worst. I was expecting a lot more casualties."

There were no injuries reported.

Ranther than securing his own damaged home, Hewin stayed to help others.

"You want to get there to try to help out as quick as you can and be there to provide the help that you're trained to provide," Hewin added.
