Mail Thieves Are Targeting Blue Drop-Off Boxes, Tulsa Man Says

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

Thieves are stealing more mail in Green Country, but now, they’re taking it right out of the blue post office boxes.

Robert with Pacesetter Trucking in Sand Springs is dealing with quite a hassle after he mailed some checks from a mailbox at 92nd and South Sheridan about 7:30 p.m.

"It's a mailbox outside an actual post office, that's where you feel safe,” Robert said. “I'll tell you right now, I no longer feel safe using an outside mailbox any time after hours."

By the next afternoon, thieves had changed the name on the check and tried to cash it at a Broken Arrow Walmart.

He says he has a photo of the man who left in a hurry when Walmart called the trucking company to confirm the check was legitimate.

The next day, someone printed up fake checks with the company's name and tried to pass it at an east Tulsa check cashing business.

That place also refused and gave Robert a photo of the person who attempted it.

He hopes both men get identified and caught.

Even though they didn't get any money, it's a huge hassle.

"We've had this bank account 15 years,” he said. “Everybody uses automatic deposits, payments, we had to change every one of those, our customers and new checks, the whole thing."

For years people were told not to mail bills from their residential boxes at home because thieves will steal -- only use the blue mailboxes.

But don’t drop into the blue mailboxes after the last pickup time. If that's the case, just walk it inside the post office.
