Scientists in Brazil have discovered a new brain disorder caused by the Zika virus.

Scientists say this new brain disorder associated with the Zika virus mostly affects adults. The brain disorder is called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis or ADEM. Scientists say the disorder attacks the brain and spinal cord.

The new discovery now shows Zika may provoke an immune attack on the central nervous system as well. ADEM typically occurs in the aftermath of an infection causing intense swelling in the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include weakness, numbness and loss of balance and vision.

Health officials say the symptoms are similar to that of multiple sclerosis.

The findings add to the growing list of neurological damage associated with Zika. Doctors say they hope future studies will shed even more light on the causes and effects of Zika.

One company hopes to be testing a Zika vaccine by September.
