Police say the driver of a GMC pickup is lucky to be alive after it slammed into a light pole near the University of Tulsa early Saturday.

Officers said the crash in the 2800 block of East 11th Street happened at about 5 a.m.  They said this could have easily been a fatality after the truck's cab was crushed when it hit the pole. Instead, police and firefighters arrived to find the driver lying on the grass beside the street.

Police say the man who was taken to a Tulsa hospital by EMSA with just leg and shoulder injuries, was westbound on 11th Street at the time.  They said the driver told officers he apparently fell asleep just prior to the crash.
