An Edison High School senior was critically injured after a 10-foot cement pillar fell on top of her on Wednesday.

In a story you’ll see only on 6, a friend tells the story of how she ran for help when the young girl became trapped. The two girls were there after school waiting on an event when they went outside into the courtyard and the unexpected happened.

“I remember knowing in that moment that it was going to hit me and then when I opened my eyes I was OK and I don't know how,” student Madeline Jones said.

Jones is still in shock after a 10-foot cement column collapsed onto her friend after school Wednesday.

The pillar crushed her friend’s hips and legs.

“I had just realized it hadn't hit me but I knew it had hit her and I saw her leg and I knew immediately that it was broken so I told her ‘don't move, I'm going to go get help,’” she said. “When it happened, before she was like I can't move, and I was like don't move."

The two seniors had hung a hammock in between the giant pillars in the court yard and were sitting together enjoying some sunshine before a student council event.

“You know, we didn't think ‘oh, this is unstable, otherwise we wouldn't have done it,” Jones said.

Her friend now in the hospital undergoing treatment for Pelvis injuries and two legs.”

Superintendent Deborah Gist told us at a meeting Wednesday, the district is investigating the incident.

"There is nothing more important to me than the safety of our children."

As for Jones, she is still trying to wrap her mind around what happened.

“At the beginning it was hard you know, not knowing what was going to happen or how she was,” she said. “Now getting to see her and knowing she's going to be OK has helped a lot."

TPS says the pillars will be removed from the campus.
