It's been more than two weeks now since Wright College closed its doors, leaving 500 Oklahoma students with big tuition bills but no proof of an education. On Monday, Oklahoma officials say they are making progress in helping those students.

Late last week the Oklahoma Attorney General ruled the Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools could have access to and release the student's transcripts. They had to take this unusual step after the email Wright College gave students to get those transcripts was not only misspelled but no one answered it.

When Wright College closed its doors the middle of last month, Lacoria Coleman was two weeks away from graduating and getting her diploma as a medical assistant.

“I don’t have anything to show for my time,” she explained. “Pregnant, I walked to school every day and caught the bus there. I didn’t miss a day if I didn’t have to.”

The time since then has been very stressful as she's been contacting new schools and trying to figure out what to do with her $22,000 in school loans.

“I’ve had to go to the hospital, a couple times for worrying. I don’t want to go to preterm labor.”

But now the Oklahoma Board of Private Vocational Schools can start issuing Wright student transcripts.

“If the students want to move on to another school, hopefully to finish their education, that new school has to be able to assess them,” explained Nora House. “So they need that detail on what classes did they take? What classes did they finish?”

Unfortunately for Coleman, graduating immediately may not be possible. But House says the education community is coming together to help her and her fellow students.

“They may not be able to transfer everything from Wright, but these new schools understand they were nearly done, do what they can to get them finished,” said House.

The board of Private Educational Schools is asking all Wright students to email them their contact information to hmyers@obpvs.ok.gov. They will tell you how to get a transcript release form.

Students that decide not to continue their education in the same field could be eligible for student loan forgiveness.
