Children and parents in Hulbert have something to be excited about this summer. The city celebrated the grand opening of the its splash pad Thursday.

Voters approved a one-cent sales tax increase to build the $400,000 splash pad. A Cherokee Nation grant also helped cover some of the cost.

About 600 people live in Hulbert and the town doesn't have a public pool. The splash pad is already a big hit, more than 20 children were there playing Thursday after school.

"It's fun and I like it because I don't get to go swimming much," 7-year-old Aveah Gifford said.

The police chief said it’s great because it will keep people in town rather than families going to bigger, neighboring cities to play.

Children and adults can play at the splash pad for free.

In addition to the splash pad, the sales tax increase also paid for an addition to the fire department, which includes a community storm shelter.
