A man who police said tried to break into a home in northeast Oklahoma City, has died after being shot by the homeowner early Tuesday morning.

According to police, at about 12:35 a.m., officers responded to the report of a burglary at a home in the 1500 block of N.E. 30th Street. When officers arrived, they learned that three suspects were trying to break into the home when they were confronted by the homeowner.

Police said the homeowner was inside the house with several family members when he heard someone trying to force entry through one of their doors.  He armed himself and opened the front door to see who was out there.  That's when he saw three men standing near the home, one of whom was holding a pistol.

Two of the suspects, police said, immediately ran away while the one holding the pistol raised the gun toward the homeowner.  The homeowner then opened fire, striking the suspect.  Investigators later determined that the gun the suspect was holding was a BB gun.  The BB gun had no orange tip and looked like a real firearm.

The homeowner was interviewed and released by detectives.

The suspect, who has not been identified at this time, was transported to the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was later pronounced dead.

The two remaining suspects were able to run away before officers arrived. Police do not have a detailed description of the two.
