Two Arrested After Altercation In Stillwater

Things escalate quickly early Sunday with a man accused of running a red light in Stillwater and nearly hitting three motorcycles.

Police said that man's now in jail and one of the bikers is healing from his injuries.

That driver is now facing a drunk driving and assault with a deadly weapon complaints for the events that unfolded on the road early Sunday morning.

It began at the intersection of 6th and Washington, about a block away from the strip, an area with several local bars.

Police say it was just after 2 a.m. Sunday when Nicholas Thompson ran a red light and nearly hit three motorcyclists.

Those bikers, according to police, followed Thompson for about two blocks to confront him about the near miss.

“The driver put the truck in reverse backed up quickly hit two of the motorcyclists behind him,” said Stillwater police Capt. Kyle Gibbs.

Officers were sent to 8th and S Washington Street after receiving a call about a reported shooting, but when they arrived they found two motorcycles flipped over in the middle of the intersection and one of the riders injured.

“The injured cyclist, the one that was knocked down off of his cycle actually pulled a gun and fired some shots at the pick up as it left the scene,” Gibbs said.

Investigators said the third biker took off chasing after Thompson, who eventually lost control of his pickup while making a left turn.

Thompson and the girl inside his pickup were both arrested on alcohol related charges.

At the time of his arrest, police said Thompson was nearly double the legal alcohol limit.

As for the motorcyclist, he could be facing charges for firing his gun at Thompson, but that will be up to the district attorney's office.
