NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - The president of the University of Oklahoma says the school's nearly $1 billion debt is large but comparable to similar public universities. The Oklahoman reports President David Boren's Wednesday statement followed earlier remarks by his successor, who starts July 1. Boren says the debt amount is close in scope to similarly rated public universities such as Oklahoma State University. OSU spokesman Gary Shutt said Thursday that the university's bonded indebtedness totals $809 million.

NEWCASTLE, Okla. (AP) - Nearly 100 teachers are running for seats in the Oklahoma Legislature after being energized this spring by a classroom walkout that saw thousands of demonstrators throng the state Capitol. Republican incumbents easily survived a similar wave of mostly Democratic teacher candidates two years. But this year dozens of teachers are running as Republicans and challenging GOP incumbents. These teachers are especially targeting those who voted against tax increases that funded teacher pay hikes.

DURANT, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a bridge over Lake Texoma has been closed following a deadly collision that sent a tractor-trailer truck careening into the reservoir that straddles the border with Texas. Troopers say the collision occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday on a U.S. Highway 70 bridge that connects Bryan and Marshall counties. Troopers say one vehicle was burning on the bridge, and the truck fell off the bridge and is submerged in the lake.

IDABEL, Okla. (AP) - A jury in southeast Oklahoma has convicted a 67-year-old man of first-degree murder in a more than three-decade old case. Court records show Ernest Lewis was convicted Wednesday in McCurtain County and sentenced to life in prison for the 1984 shooting death of Johnny Smith at K.C.S. Lumber Company in Idabel. An attorney for Lewis did not immediately return a phone call for comment.
