Tulsa City-County 'Seed Library' Ready For Summer Gardeners

Libraries are a great resource. You can borrow books and do research; but at some Tulsa libraries, you can even borrow seeds.

Johanna Burton runs the seed saving and lending program at the Tulsa City-County Library and said they have lots of seeds.

Burton: "I've got lettuce, Red Romaine lettuce. I've got Grandpa Admire's lettuce."
Rick: "Who was Grandpa Admire?"
Burton: "I don't know, but apparently he had really good lettuce."

She said they’ve got lots of customers, too.

"We've checked out 800 packets this spring, as of May," Burton said.

And they are beginning to get ready for the fall gardeners later this summer.

It's a simple system - you check out the seeds with your library card, just like a book, and at the end of the season, save some seeds from the plants you planted and bring them back.

They also hope you'll provide a little extra information, like what variety of carrots or cantaloupe.

One of the best things about renting seeds from the library is that they also have lots of books to help teach you how to garden.
