TULSA, Oklahoma -

One man is dead and two other are injured after shots were fired in an east Tulsa neighborhood. Police say an officer who fired his weapon here overnight may have saved several lives.

Two people are in custody being interviewed at the Tulsa Police Detective Division. In all, three people were shot. Two other people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They're expected to be OK.

Police said when they arrived in a neighborhood near 15th and 129th streets around 1:30 a.m., a suspect shot at three or four people in the middle of the street. That's when police say an officer shot at the suspect shooting others, but that shot did not hit the suspect.

Police say they had two suspects in custody in a matter of 10 minutes, and the corporal we spoke with describes this as a chaotic scene Sunday morning.

"We get called here for some kind of trouble unknown, a disturbance in the middle of the street. Officer rolls up - sees a problem going on," said Tulsa Police Corporal Darin Ehrenreich.

"One person pulls out a gun and shoots several people, one of those individuals dies, two others are injured in the street. The officer returns fire to one of those suspects, stopping the carnage, without a doubt saving multiple lives."

Neighbor Joy Prater heard the shots early Sunday morning.

"All of a sudden it was just, pop, pop, pop," she said. "I mean, like a machine gun almost."

Prater's husband also saw two people fall down in the street, She said he just wanted them to duck down and stay safe. They've lived in the neighborhood for 47 years.

"This neighborhood used to be really, really good," Joy Prater said. "I let my kids play out front. I don't know about my grandkids now. It's pretty scary.

The medical examiner arrived on scene, and authorities removed the body from a car parked in the street.

Officers set up a canopy in the heavy rain as they investigate the scene in the middle of a Tulsa street. They are working to learn what took place that led up to the fatal shooting.

They have not released the names of the two men who are currently in custody for questioning or the names of the victims.
