Man Bitten By Water Moccasin While Fishing On Collinsville City Lake

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

An Owasso man is recovering after being bitten by a water moccasin at the City of Collinsville Lake.

Adam Kirk said he needed 14 doses of anti-venom and said he’s lucky to be alive.

Kirk said he was near the water’s edge, fishing with his family, when the snake bit him.

"Just about the minutes the snake bites you, it's almost immediate pain," he said.

Kirk had just driven a snake away from his kids and was walking in tall grass when a water moccasin bit him.

"By the time I got to the hospital, my eyes were rolling to the back of my head and I was unresponsive," Kirk said.

After staying in the hospital a few days, and 14 vials of anti-venom, he is now back at home recovering. He believes immediately going to the hospital saved his life.

"If it had been longer, I could have lost my hand or lost a finger. My finger is still not out of the woods yet, but it is looking promising," Kirk said.

Knowing how close the snake was to his kids makes it even scarier for him.

Kirk said, "I can't imagine my kids being hit. It would have been much worse for a young person."

Although isolated, the lake will soon become busier as walking and biking trails are being added through the woods.

Kirk’s sister, Alyssa Bump, said, "It makes me feel like the population may increase because they are destroying their homes."

"We see them every time we are out there," Kirk said. “This happened in a split second. You have to be very aware."

Kirk hopes, as more people continue to visit the lake, the city will put up signs warning people of the snakes.
