Some may think the days of horse and buggy driving are long gone. But some Oklahomans are working to keep that way of life alive.

It's a scene you're not likely to see in the city, but driving horses is a passion and a hobby for more Oklahomans than most might think.

“We love horses and we want to show our love of horses to everyone and show the things they can do,” said Sula Robertson with the Oklahoma Draft Horse and Mule Association.

Robertson has been driving draft horses for more than half her life.

“A draft horse is any horse that pulls something,” she said. “They provide the horsepower to do the job that we want done.”

Some draft horses are big, others are small.

“Most of the people are using the horses for pleasure, but some people do plow, some people do get their hay up with horses, and some people just enjoy a drive down a country road,” Robertson said.

“Many people tell us these great stories about their grandparents driving a team of horses on the farms,” Robertson said.

On Saturday the group is giving people the chance to go back in time, but hosting its annual free clinic to teach the basics of driving horses.

Robertson said it will bring in people from all over the state, as well as Arkansas and Missouri; and there will be some who have never driven a horse before.

The driving class is booked this weekend, but guests are welcome to go watch and pet the horses for free.
