Anonymous Donors Give Three $5,000 Checks To Miami Police Department

Posted: Updated:
MIAMI, Oklahoma -

The Miami Police Department says three separate $5,000 donations over the past week have left many of their officers speechless.

Police Captain Todd Hicks told KOAM, the CBS affiliate in Joplin, last week, a woman came through the doors of the police department and dropped-off two $5,000 checks.  The woman said another person gave her the money to drop-off, and both wanted to remain anonymous.

The captain believes this act of kindness was because of the recent shooting tragedy in Dallas, Texas.  He says receiving the donations was surprising, to say the least.

"Chief Anderson saw it first, and he was just like, oh my goodness!  And then he showed it to me and some others here, and we were just like, oh that's unreal," says Captain Todd Hicks.

Captain Hicks says the money will help the Miami Police Department tremendously.

Another anonymous $5,000 check was donated last week to the Miami Fraternal Order of Police.

The department hasn't made plans yet what to do with the $15,000, but they definitely have needs.

"Things that we have to have today, like our video, our on-person video cameras.  It takes a lot to maintain those.  We do have them, our officers do wear the cameras, but you know as well as I do, the maintaining part of it takes quite a bit of money," says Captain Hicks.

"We do this job to protect our community, to give back to our community.  And you know, it's not always appreciated.  But when it is, it's just, it's a blessing," says Hicks.  He added, "the material part of the gift, is something, but it's the thought behind it that really hits home."
