Former Tulsa Dentist Sentenced For Money Laundering

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

A former Tulsa dentist was sentenced to six months house arrest and two years of probation for money laundering.

As soon as Scott Harrington left the court room he said he was ready to serve the sentence and move on with his life.

Thursday, a judge said a number of things went into his decision, including his history and the nature of the offense.

Harrington was accused in 2013 of exposing thousands of patients to HIV and hepatitis.

Many patients are now suing him.

While it's unknown what will happen with those cases, Thursday, he was sentenced to six months house arrest and two years of probation for Medicaid fraud; he billed the government for anesthesia he wasn't administering himself.

Prosecutors think it will serve as an example to others.

"I wouldn't think very many dentists want to be before any judge in the federal courts being sentenced, so I do think it will serve as a deterrent effect,” said U.S. Attorney Mark Green.

Harrington already paid nearly $30,000 in restitution. The judge also ordered he pay a $20,000 fine.

Harrington's counsel, Dan Webber, released a statement regarding the sentence saying, "Scott has accepted responsibility for his conduct and accepts the Court's sentence. He looks forward to closing the book on this chapter of his life and getting on with the rest of it."
