Hot Weekend For Oklahoma, But A Break Next Week

TULSA, Oklahoma -

The heat advisory will remain today and possibly for part of the weekend for some locations before the mid-level ridge weakens and allows a more favorable upper air flow to bring a few storms near the northern third of the state early next week.   Daytime highs will be near 100 again today with heat index values from 105 to 110.    Temperatures next week will drop into the mid-90s with a few chances for storms.

Weather Alerts

Despite the forecast, we did not hit 100 yesterday afternoon officially at Tulsa International.   We missed it be one degree!   We’ll keep the mention again today and Saturday for 100-102 with morning lows in the upper 70s and lower 80s.   Southwest surface winds both today and tomorrow should allow for a minor drying (lowering) of local dew points and this will bring the humidity down slightly for the afternoon hours.   The result should be an increase in surface air temperature of about 2 degrees with the heat index values leveling off around 105-108 Saturday.    The heat index today will still be in the 107 to 108 range and yet another heat advisory will remain for the afternoon and early evening.

The mid-level ridge is expected to spit with the dominate ridge retrograding (moving west) by the end of the weekend.   This will eventually create a favorable northwest flow that will brush the far northwestern part of the state by Monday through Wednesday.   A few showers or storms will be likely to brush the eastern third of the state during this period.   Some data also suggest a minor easterly wave type feature moving across the northern Gulf into or near the ArklaTex region by Wednesday and Thursday.   This may also act to produce a few storms or at least enforce the moisture in the atmosphere.

WARN Interactive Radar

Remain hydrated with plenty of water due to the elevated heat index numbers for the next few days.
