STILLWATER, Oklahoma -

Oklahoma State University continues to mourn the sudden death of one its basketball player Thursday afternoon.

Tyrek Coger, 22, died after a team workout in Stillwater.

Coger had been on campus only two weeks as a junior college transfer from North Carolina.

The basketball team was running stadium stairs at Boone Pickens Stadium.  OSU says the Stillwater Fire Department arrived at 5:08 p.m., he made it to Stillwater Medical Center at 5:48 p.m. and doctors pronounced him dead at 6:23 p.m.

"This is the hardest couple of days I've ever experienced in my coaching life and making that phone call to mother, there are no words," said OSU basketball coach Brad Underwood.

The heat index at Stillwater airport was 107 Thursday afternoon and with all the metal bleachers at Boone Pickens Stadium can imagine how hot it felt like.
We're told it was about a 40 minute workout, strength coaches and athletic trainers were supervising, but it doesn't appear there's a set policy when it comes to OSU workouts in extreme heat.

"I've got a lot a lot of questions about this.  Never happened before, never happen again.  No answers today.  At the appropriate time we'll delve into this and find some answers," said OSU athletic director Mike Holder.

The medical examiner said his cause of death was cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) with left ventricular hypertrophy and the manner of death was natural.
