Tulsa Police Investigating After Woman Shot In Back

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tulsa police have two men in custody they are calling persons of interest in a woman's shooting. The woman was wounded in the back outside her Tulsa home during an attempted robbery.

Police said they were called to 5100 South 34th West Avenue just after 9 p.m. and found the woman lying face down next to her car. She was struggling for breath, and firefighters gave her first aid until EMSA took her to the hospital.

She told police she'd just got home when three men tried to rob her. She began to yell for help then felt the gunshot to her back, police records show.

Right now, police said there is no indication the woman knows the three men.

Tulsa Police Officer Demita Kinard said officers don't know where the woman was coming from, they just know she was arriving home when someone shot her.

"When the officers found her, she was literally gasping for air. And that's why they had to render immediate aid. The officers weren't able to really interview her, not even a full interview, but just get some information from her, until she was at the hospital and more stable," Kinard said.

Kinard says three men demanded she drive them to an ATM, then took her purse and cell phone.

“She was startled, she screamed, next thing you know, she feels something and she had been shot,” Kinard said.

Neighbors said they heard the commotion.

"Well, we just sitting here watching TV, all of a sudden we heard that bang,” Doris Dunbar said.

Dunbar and her husband Billy moved into the neighborhood in 1978.

“We never have any trouble around here,” Billy Dunbar said.

Billy goes for walks all the time, and now Doris is more concerned for his safety than usual.

“That kinda worries me, you know, and sometimes he won’t get here back home when I think he should,” she said.

The Dunbars say all the activity Wednesday night leaves them feeling startled.

“We’ve never had anything like this happen before,” Doris said. “And it really shocked us because, well, we thought 'well it's all north of town or it's all east of town, and looks like they've tried to start on this side."

Two men were interviewed in connection to the crime but were released, according to police. The woman is in the hospital but is expected to survive.

They're still investigating. If you have any information call Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.
