Sunday was moving day for the Thornton YMCA.

The YMCA of Greater Tulsa is moving out of the historic building near 51st and Yale. The Tandy Family YMCA will have its grand opening on Monday.

The new facility was built in collaboration with the OU School of Community Medicine and OU Physicians-Tulsa.

It includes more modern fixtures, pools, fitness center, as well as a space for OU-Tulsa to use for therapy.

The new facility is built right next to the old Thornton building, and the YMCA says it still has plans to use the old building.

"We're going to go back into the old YMCA - we're going to rip off our locker rooms and pools - and then renovate that space to look exactly like Phase 1 and 2,” YMCA’s Kyle Wilkes said.

The YMCA says it has taken about eight years to get the project to this point.

Plans are to finish renovating the old Thornton building next year.
