Oklahoma's Sales Tax Holiday Is This Friday Through Sunday

The end of summer vacation is fast approaching, so that means it is back-to-school shopping time.

This weekend is a tax-free one in Oklahoma, meaning parents could save a lot of money on supplies.

The shelves at the Walmart at 111th and Memorial in Tulsa are fully stocked, ahead of the big crowds to come.

Although shopping sales tax-free only applies to clothes and shoes, supplies are on sale this weekend; and with some things priced at only 50 cents, you can save big bucks.

While some kids aren't excited about saying goodbye to summer, most are happy to get some new school supplies.

Eli Summerland's mom wanted get shopping out of the way before the big crowds this weekend.

“Pencil boxes, glue sticks, pencils, markers, crayons,” Eli's said.

Parent Jeremy Oman is doing the same thing. 

"I didn't want to wait for tax-free weekend, so I figured I would get out here early and get all the stuff I need," he said.

Friday through Sunday, all clothes and shoes under $100 are tax-free.

Walmart assistant store manager, Jeff Berg, expects a very busy weekend.

“We are excited for parents to come in, find those outfits kids need to have for back-to-school, and find them at prices, that tax-free, they will be able to buy another backpack," Berg said.

He's been planning for the tax-free weekend for three months - stocking up on binders, notebooks, pencil bags and much more.

"What are the items parents want, what are the items teachers want," Berg said.

He expects one of the hottest items will be a school supply list staple, crayons.

"Crayola. 24-pack by Crayola, 50 cents this weekend,” he said.

New this year, you can avoid the crowds altogether.

Berg said, “You can go online, use your tablet, use your iPhone, and pick those items straight from your phone and we will deliver those items to you, to your car."

You can even pay for it online, and all you have to do is sign the receipt when you pull up.

Walmart said the average parent will pay about $40 per child for back-to-school supplies.

The holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2016 and ends at twelve midnight Sunday, August 7, 2016.
