Some Tulsa teachers are are getting an inside look of how the health industry works. A program has teachers out looking at careers so they can better help students consider the same thing.

They have already visited the Port of Catoosa and some banking centers. On Thursday, they got a look at health care.

The Cancer Treatment Center brought in people at the hospital with several different kinds of jobs to talk with the teachers and describe a number of good jobs available throughout the healthcare industry. They want to teachers to know it's not just for doctors and nurses, but there are a lot of other well-paying healthcare jobs are available right here in Tulsa.

"I feel there's a disconnect from what we do here in education - just get them ready for college," said John Wells, a teacher at Tulsa Webster.

"We need to be thinking: what's the next step; where do they go after? We should be preparing students for careers and not just post-secondary education."

The effort to connect Tulsa Public Schools teachers with different industries was put together by the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce. It's an effort to straighten out the pipeline between education and the workforce. They want to make sure businesses have the kind of employees they need and kids in school know there are great jobs available for them right here in Tulsa.
