Community Upset After Wagoner County Church, Cemetery Are Vandalized With Racial Slurs

Posted: Updated:

A community is upset after a hate crime happened just outside Porter in Wagoner county.

A church and cemetery were vandalized with racial slurs.

Porter mayor Steve Dickey worked to clean up cemetery stones and a church building Friday morning after seeing a post on Facebook about the racist vandalism and driving by.

“We just don't need this in our community,” said Dicky.

The Mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist church is a predominately black church as well as the nearby cemetery.

Two gravestones were vandalized in the cemetery where racial slurs were written across the front.

A passerby even left a note that said, "I am so sorry this happened. I put some paper over it so people couldn't see. We let the cops know. God bless."

Mayor Dickey grew up in Porter and knows some of the families buried at the cemetery.

He says this is not what his community is about.

“I was appalled,” he said. “I grew up on a farm, and I was taught we don't stand for this. It's a real shame that people go through this.”

A neighbor tells us they made a report with the Wagoner County sheriff's office and they hope whoever did this is caught.

Mayor Dickey said he doesn't know why this happened and that this kind of crime won't be tolerated.
