Stores Gear Up For Oklahoma's Tax-Free Weekend

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

It's officially tax-free weekend here in Oklahoma.

It's a state incentive to help parents buy clothing and shoes for their families and not have to worry about paying the sales tax.

It's a shopping blitz most of us are used to after Thanksgiving.

This is a tax-free weekend in Oklahoma, and the state won't charge you sales tax on clothes and shoes under $100.

It's meant to give families an opportunity to prepare for the coming school year.

"We've got all the different sizes for the girls and the boys, as far as the khakis and all the things that they need," said Target representative Wallace Hartman.

"We just love it,” stated Shoe Carnival spokesperson Eric Cook. “We just love this time of year, like I said it's kind of like Christmas"

Even some items that aren't a part of the free tax weekend are on sale as well, like school supplies, some of which are flying off the shelves.

"You're probably looking at, almost 60 percent of the product over there is on sale," said Hartman.

But many stores with nothing to do with school are finding ways to attract crowds.

"It affects a lot of the businesses and economy, not just those that are tax-free," Cook explained.

For 2A Shooting Center in Tulsa, having their own promotion is a no-brainer.

"Having that coincide with this weekend, just another way to get more people through the door," said Geoff Portman of 2A Shooting Center.

Even if they can't offer the tax incentive.

"Still getting taxed but you get ten percent off the gun," he said.

Even fast-food restaurants are getting into the act.

"When they are hungry, they should just come and visit chipotle," said Saida Delrio.

Chipotle is offering free food later if you eat here this weekend.

"You bring your receipt on Monday and you'll get free chips and guac," said Delrio.
