OWASSO, Oklahoma -

Macy's, the nation’s biggest department store chain, is closing at least 100 stores next year, which is about 14 percent of its store base.

It's unclear if the Macy's at the Promenade Mall and Woodland Hills will be here next year, but it's another story for the Fulfillment Center in Owasso - Macy's said the store closures will not have a direct impact there.

"Very thankful for that - brand new facility, all these jobs. We want to continue to see a forward momentum on that, so very, very, thankful about that," said Owasso director of economic development, Chelsea Levo.

She said the center has been nothing but positive for the city.

"We just have really appreciated their presence in this community and their participation," Levo said.

We asked Macy's if the store closures are a response to any increase in online sales. Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Sluzewski said in an email, "Our company's online sales continue to grow by double-digits year-over-year."

And that's exactly what the Fulfillment Center is there to support, online shopping.

Levo said, "They receive the order from the customer, they pack it and they ship it."

Right now, about 3,000 people work at the Fulfillment Center, and Macy's is looking to hire more employees for seasonal positions.

Levo said those jobs make a positive difference in the city.

"We've seen the increase in traffic in our sales tax establishments, probably frequented from people eating and shopping in our community - we like that. We've seen an increase in housing development," she said.

Macy's said it plans to announce which stores will close at a later date.
