The University of Tulsa’s Fan Fest was a success Saturday morning as the Golden Hurricane football team went through a 123-play scrimmage, then signed autographs afterwards for fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

“We got out healthy. That was the No. 1 concern coming into today. We wanted to be a little sharper in some areas. The biggest thing is, you get it on tape,” said Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery.

“We had a bunch of young guys playing. We held a few guys out today. Keevan (Lucas) was pretty limited on what we let him do. We held Josh (Atkinson) out. A couple other guys that were just kind of banged up from camp already. The biggest thing is young guys got reps and we got a chance to see some guys under the lights a little bit with it turned up. I’m pleased with everything right now. Obviously, we’ll go in and watch it on tape. There are a lot of things we have to get better at, but it’s a good first scrimmage.”

The offense scored three touchdowns, all with Dane Evans at the helm of the unit and all three scores coming on the ground, while the defense came away with a safety and four interceptions, including two by junior cornerback Kerwin Thomas.

Evans led the offense on a six-play, 75-yard drive to open the scrimmage, capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by James Flanders. In four offensive series for the senior quarterback, Evans guided the offense to three scores. On his second possession at quarterback, Evans led the offense on an 80-yard drive, completing 5-of-6 passes and scoring a touchdown on a five-yard run himself.

Evans also led the offensive unit on another 75-yard scoring drive in eight plays, as a 41-yard pass to Justin Hobbs put the offense at the 19-yard line. Four plays later, Flanders went the final five yards for his second touchdown of the game.

“I was really pleased with the defense,” said Montgomery. “They had several three-and-outs in there, a couple of big interceptions in there as well. I thought they played much better against the run, and we eliminated explosive plays. That’s kind of been our goal all the way through it –– control the run, eliminate the big plays, at least put a lid on them, and when we get into those third down situations, make sure that we get off the field.”

In addition to the four interceptions, the Tulsa defense was credited with 10 tackles for -34 yards, including six sacks for -25 yards.

D’Angelo Brewer had a team-high 84 rushing yards on eight carries, while Flanders had 34 yards and the two TDs on eight carries. Hobbs had a high game in receiving with 75 yards on six receptions.

Tulsa takes Sunday off from the practice field, and will return to practice on Monday.
