A warning that included three nooses was up only one day along Highway 75 before a homeowner decided to take it down, according to Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice.

The display had a lot of people stopping and staring along the highway. The nooses were hung in a tree with a sign that read, "it's best not to be hanging around this area after dark."

Rice said the homeowner  removed the nooses because of all the attention on social media and the possible safety hazards from people stopping on the highway.

The Okmulgee County sheriff said the homeowner took down the sign later Monday evening.

The sheriff's office went to talk to the man after getting complaints. They did not ask him to take it down because it broke no laws, Rice said, but the man voluntarily removed the ropes.

He told the sheriff's office he hung up the nooses and sign because he had recently been targeted by thieves and has a lot of people trespass on his property.
